Jan and Sandy Hagan, along with thirteen Malamutes, two Inuit puppies, and two cats, live
near Stacy, Minnesota. Sandy became "MAL'ed" in the early 70's, when he and his daughter,
Andrea, started researching various breeds of dogs. They decided on the Alaskan Malamute
and soon afterwards "Snuffy" came to live with them. A second Malamute, "Pippin", joined them
as Andrea's dog. When Jan and Sandy were married, in the mid 70's, they moved to Stacy and
became interested in sledding with the Malamutes. In addition, Jan also became interested
in the conformation show ring.
Due to genetic concerns with their original dogs, they subsequently decided to change bloodlines, and started re-populating their kennel with dogs from Fire 'N Ice. Today they have both Fire 'N Ice dogs and Kingsdale dogs (Keith and Cindy Olson). Most recently they acquired two Inuit Eskimo puppies, whose parents come from Baffin Island.
Jan and Sandy use the kennel name of Lonesome Pines. Any visitor to their lovely home knows it is surrounded by pine trees. In addition, Sandy confesses that many years ago he was enchanted by a softshoe routine that was done in a Laurel and Hardy movie to the tune of "On the Trail of the Lonesome Pine".
Both Jan and Sandy are very active in the Minnesota Malamute Club. In the world outside
of their dogs, Sandy is a warehouse manager for H. Brooks & Co., and Jan is a medical
technologist at Mercy Hospital. In addition to their love of the dogs, they are both
devotees of classical music and are season ticket holders for performances of the
Minnesota Orchestra.
