Terry and Scott Miller live near Hinckley, Minnesota - along with their eleven dogs.
Seven members of the canine population are Alaskan Malamutes, and the others are three
Inuit (Eskimo) dogs and one Inuit-Malamute mix. Their Malamutes are from
Black Ice Kennel (Dave and Shilon Bedford) and Kingsdale Kennel (Keith and
Cindy Olson). For a kennel name they have chosen Qimmitsiaq, which means
'beautiful dog' in the Inuit language. Their Canadian Inuit dogs come from
Pond Inlet,, on the northern tip of Baffin Island.
Terry and Scott are both natives of Minnesota, having grown up in Forest Lake. As a child, Terry had a Malamute and has always been interested in the arctic. Scott became "MALed" through Terry, although he still holds a soft spot in his heart for retrievers.
Terry holds a master's degree in linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. Her specialty, naturally, is the study of the Inuit language. Although technically it is a single language, its many dialects give it a rich diversity. In the early 90's, Terry spent three weeks in the village of Iqaluit, on the southern tip of Baffin Island, studying Inuktitut, one of the Inuit language dialects.
Recently Terry and Scott, along with Jan and Sandy Hagan, spent a week in Northern Minnesota, at "dog mushing camp" under the tutelage of veteran musher Jamie Nelson. It was a wonderful learning experience for all four of them, and they returned with glowing reports of Jamie's ability to handle and train sled dogs. "Teach Your Dogs To Pull", written by Terry, is an excellent account of their week with Jamie.
Both Terry and Scott are very active in the Minnesota Malamute Club. Other interests
include naturalist activities, with emphasis on plants and bird watching. They have
made two trips to Alaska and also traveled through the Rocky Mountains. Before becoming
involved with sled dogs, they took canoe trips through the Boundary Waters area of northern
Minnesota. In addition to their many other activities, Terry and Scott have become
serious joggers. (hum.... keeping up with the dogs?)
Professionally, Scott teaches English at the Alternative Learning Center in
North Branch and Terry is a receptionist at the South Shore Veterinary Hospital in
Forest Lake.
