About Malamutes

Alaskan Malamutes are beautiful, goofy, loving dogs, but definitely not the breed for everyone.  Please consider the following as you investigate whether one will fit into your life.

The Malamute:
  • Malamutes can be extremely stubborn, difficult to train, and independent.  They are intelligent dogs, which is why building a sound relationship early is important.
  • They are thinkers who need mental and physical stimulation lest they become destructive.
  • If not properly socialized, they can had a tendency towards dog-aggression, meaning they will tend to be argumentative with other dogs, especially those of the same sex.
  • They are prey-driven and are hunters by nature. They will not generally co-exist peacefully with small animals, such as cats, unless raised with them.
  • They have a propensity for digging holes and will happily terraform your yard.
  • They cannot be allowed to run off-leash.
  • They are big dogs and shed an incredible amount multiple times a year.
  • They are people-oriented dogs, and do not do well if isolated in a kennel and left alone for much of the time.
  • They are not guard dogs.
